Combat Operations im F-Shop |
 |

---------------------------
In case anyone stills needs my review of Combat Operations here it is.
As promised here are my comments. I like this book. I think it adds to the game. It does add complexity though and will take additional in-game time and record keeping, probably a lot of game prep time as well. I haven’t used any of these rules yet but I hope to in the future. Much of the rules in this book could very well be added to HMTO&E and probably should to be honest (But it would give Rick a major headache I think, but he'll have to take a look at them and decide). You can track individual inventories of equipment with these rules. You can create any size unit that you want as well, up to including the original SLDF if you wanted to spend that much time. The Force faction tables will be a great help and feature units not on the Faction List website, including what I would guess are some of the designs coming in TRO: 3026 and TRO: 3057. This book will teach you that an army doesn't get created out of thin air and live in a vacuum if you want to get that detailed. Medical troops now can cure wounded especially infantry.
The only place that communication troops and Intel types are mentioned is in the essays, which are very good and give you an overview of how the various factions look at things in regards to war fighting and also descriptions of the various troop types and roles. They also talk about logistics and intelligence operations.
The Infantry Platoon Construction rules are quite interesting. They are designed to make units that use the equipment from CBT: RPG to make platoons. They do mention vehicles for motorized troops but there are no additional rules. Horse Cavalry units are counted as motorized infantry as are bicycle troops. Mechanized Infantry have different MP based on their mode of transport:
Hover 5
Wheeled 4
Tracked 3
VTOL (Microlite) 6
VTOL (Micro-copter) 5
You can also create specialized troops such as Marines, Paratroops, SCUBA troops, Combat Engineers, etc. I’m not sure if these rules can be added to HM Battle Armor, HMLite or will need their own program. Having a computer program would definitely make life easier.
The Aerotech 2 section provides rules for crew quality, boarding actions, sensor operation, and grounded dropships. There are also rules for Zero-G operations including how to use ‘Mechs, Battle Armor, and ProtoMechs in AT2 games. I think these rules are all quite useful.
The next section is on how to link scenarios for campaigns. It includes rules for determining maps, scenarios, salvage, determining who is the attacker and defender, and winning the campaign.
The final section of the book is I think the most interesting. The Strategic Game called The Inner Sphere in Flames. All the economics are done in resource points. In basic economics every two planets give you 1 Resource point or RP. With the Advanced Economic System you get differing amounts of points from each world and can get really complex. There is a table listing how many worlds each faction controls at a given year. The years given (which are called Era’s in the game) are 2570 (Before the Reunification War), 2750 )Fall of the Star League), 3025 (Before 4th Succession War), 3030 (After the 4th Succession War), 3040 (After the War of 3039 and Free Rasalhague Republic Creation), 3052 (After the Clan Invasion), 3057 (After War of ’57), 3062 (Before FedCom Civil War), and 3067 (After FedCom Civil War and Start of WoB Jihad). Some interesting info from the table is that the Capellan Confederation in 2750 was the second largest nation with 436 worlds and the Rim Worlds Republic was the largest Periphery State with 248 worlds. With your RP’s you can do things such as raise new regiments, increase security at various sites and around people, research technology (You can even work you way to having your own HPG’s and eventually a real time HPG network), conduct intelligence operations, build factories, build WarShips, and many other options. Building a WarShip is a very expensive process. Here’s an example of just how expensive. Units are raised in Company/Trinary sized ground units. A single company of any Inner Sphere Level 2 Assault ‘Mechs (Available 3050-3067) costs 4.5 resource points. So you want to buy 10 companies? No problem. A simple 45 RP’s. Now you want to buy ONE Avalon Class Cruiser? No problem. Open up HMAero and look at the Avalon’s Battle Value (174,829). Divide the BV by 1000 (174.829 or 175). So your ONE Avalon cost 175 RP’s. The Strategic Game is something Rick may want to look into putting into HMMap or another program.
